This week’s #TankaTuesday prompt from WordCraft Poetry is to write an ekphrastic poem, a poem inspired by visual art. Reena provided a piece of her artwork for the challenge. My response is a tanka with a syllable count of 5/7/5/7/7.

riot of color
wild whimsy overlapping
patterned with daydreams
a mosaic of summer
where neon butterflies bloom
Great Tanka….great imagery!! Great post Diana!! Thanks for sharing!

Diana, somehow your word choices fit perfectly in this tanka – I especially love your use of “riot” and “mosaic” – they play off of one another in my mind!

Beautiful, Diana! Coincidentally, I made a note to myself on my calendar to plant flowers that attract butterflies next summer. I’ll just have to make sure my cat can’t read them, lol.

Lol. I have a few butterfly bushes, Teri. And they love my lavender and mint. I need to plant milkweed for the monarchs since they’re endangered now. I’m glad you enjoyed the poem. 🙂

The picture prompted your poem, and your poem prompts pictures all its own. Every line is evocative for me, both linguistically and imaginatively. As I always say about your stories, your poetry is never derivative; it always feels fresh and uniquely you.
