Almost Iowa

โ€œHey Walt, howโ€™s retirement?โ€

The elephant swept his great gray head from side to side, searching for the source of the tiny voice.

โ€œItโ€™s okay,โ€ he said.

A rustle in the straw revealed the nose of a white mouse.

โ€œDo you miss anything about the circus?โ€

โ€œIs that you, Max?โ€

โ€œYeah.โ€

โ€œI do.โ€

โ€œWhat do you miss most?โ€

โ€œI miss being somebody,โ€ Walt said, โ€œI liked the work. These days, Iโ€™m just a waste of hay living off generosity.โ€

โ€œWelcome to our world,โ€ the mouse replied.

โ€œI never had a problem sharing with you guys,โ€ Walt said, โ€œyou keep me entertained.โ€

A few more heads poked out of the straw.

โ€œI guess that puts us in the same business,โ€ one of them squeaked.

Walt grinned.

โ€œI wonโ€™t miss the stress, though,โ€ he said.

Max turned to his buddies and wise-cracked, โ€œOh, the pain of being a celebrity.โ€

That busted theโ€ฆ
