I’m in WordPress Jail

UPDATE: I’ve been released. Thank you to everyone who was offering to march on the jailhouse, hide files in cakes, and print T-shirts. Β Back to Bloggin’!

I’ve been stuck in WordPress Jail since early this morning. Connections were wobbly at first and then they just keeled over. The WP Happiness Engineers are wonderfully helpful but no solutions yet. Yes, the problem is only with WordPress.

For some reason, I can use reader, but I can’t visit any sites to read full posts. I can’t get on my own site! I’m sending this from some mysterious screen that I was able to pull up. Hopefully, it will work.

So, if you haven’t seen my happy little gravatar, it because I’m suffering over here. I’ll catch up when they figure out what’s going on. At least, I’m getting some editing done!

Miss you. I’ll be back when I make bail.

  1. I’m happy to read it’s back to normal for you!! I almost had a heartattack last week when I thought I’d accidentally deleted my website lol

  2. Glad you’re back. I went through something similar yesterday. Couldn’t make changes on my blog. Contacted WP and was told that my theme was retired!! HOW COULD THEY DO THAT TO ME? I asked, kinda being funny (kinda not). So now I’m spending waaaayyy too much time searching themes to change to. I really like yours – mind if I use it too?? πŸ˜‰

    • Of course you can, but my theme is no longer available either! They haven’t wrecked my site yet – Yikes – I wonder if that’s coming down the road! When I set up a second site, I tried to pick something where the format was familiar and I could add my own background: The Misty Lake theme. You can see how it looks here: https://dwallacepeachbooks.com/ (Don’t follow that site though. It’s a repeat of what’s here, but limited to book stuff for readers.) Good luck with your search and making all the adjustments. I hope it goes smoothly.

Glad everything is working. I was having problems with my routers dropping out, so my tech team (husband) gleefully went to Frys and replaced our router. All appears to be working well now, but it can get really frustrating for me because I don’t understand a lot of the tech stuff. I usually shriek, “Husband, help me.” He comes in, plugs in the computer or touches the screen and it’s fixed.

Lol Diana, although a very frustrating (and familiar) situation, I saw from your follow up post and interview with Alistair that you’re back up and running. WordPress can certainly tend to suck out our last nerve sometimes. ❀

  10. My last review got very little attention. I’m going to pretend all my potential readers were in wordpress jail, and my writing was just fine.

  12. Oh gosh, Diana. That’s so very frustrating. Everyone seems to be having odd WordPress problems, every time I turn around. And I’ve had a few myself. Those gremlins are working overtime. They should get a union… Great big hug.

  13. Haha cute post…now I am wondering if it was a wordpress problem I was having , and there I was blaming my computer. I wasn’t able to ‘link’ properly …sometimes it would work, then not.
These are times I wish I was techno inclined ! Oh well…. Hope you find a ‘get out of jail free’ card soon. πŸ™‚ Till then. x

Had the same problem here. The weird part? I took my laptop to a different location and was able to access wordpress.com sites easily. Came back home and couldn’t access any of them. Finally sorted it with these steps, which might help anyone using Windows:

Click your “start” globe and then type “cmd” (no quote marks) in the search bar. When that pops up, you should see this (or something similar): C:\Windows\system32> After the > type ping and a website. I used “ping http://www.google.com” (again, no quotes). If all goes well your system should send out pings and get all or nearly all of your ping “packets” back.

I then pinged wordpress.com which brought up my WP Reader. Then I pinged a wordpress.com website, and the packets came back just fine.

Next, run a trace like this: C:\Windows\system32>tracert followed by a space and then your website. After I saw “Trace Complete” the website came back up.

    I hope this helps!

If this was monopoly you would only need to throw the dice three times or get a double and you’re out! Hope everything sorts soon and the problem isn’t too serious. I have hiccups with WP but nothing too serious yet (touch wood!)

  16. I had the exact same problem and finally got it resolved today. It is an issue of ping/no ping and track-back features on your router.

  20. Hang on. I’ll stop by later with one of my “special” cakes (just don’t bite down too hard, the file will ruin your teeth). Sorry to hear of your tech difficulties. As a former IT professional, I know first-hand how weird those problems can be, and how hard it is to find the cause and fix them sometimes. At least you’re taking advantage of your incarceration πŸ™‚ Keep editing, writing, and moving forward!

    • I was hoping this morning everything would be miraculously fixed. I still can’t get onto any WP sites (everything else is fine). Will troubleshoot today. The Happiness Engineers gave me a list of data to collect and send to them… in the mean time, more editing πŸ™‚

  24. Oh, Diana, that’s terrible. Unfortunately, it’s happened to other blogs in the past. It’s a glitch. Amazon has me messed up. I can’t use my new international debit card. The site won’t accept it as payment for an ebook. Their customer service tried to help with no success. I also contacted the bank with no luck so far. The card’s been validated at the ATM. I’m afraid I stand a chance of losing the over 30 e-books I already have on my Cloud account. Computers can mess you up so bad. I hope you’re out of WordPress jail soon. 😦 —- Suzanne

    • That’s such a shame, Suzanne! When technology messes up like this, it’s just so hard to fix. My problem is only with WP, so I don’t think it’s my computer, but WP says they don’t see anything wrong on their end. Still working on it. I hope you’re able to retrieve your books! I hope you get out of Amazon jail soon too. 😦

Diana, ironically anytime I find a pack of my blogging friends “awaiting approval” for comments made, I tell them I found them in the WP “holding cell, purgatory or jail!” Lol, not making this up!
I had in January a series of neatly planned, evenly spaced blogs dispatched with no rhyme nor reason! (Ahead of time and in clusters! Yikes!)
The fellow bloggers said, “This post says it is January 12th and it is the 3rd,” or some such nonsense; over and over again. I gave up trying to apologize and “Let It Go.” (My grandies love the song from, “Frozen.”)

The Overlord loves the song “Let it go.” He sings it with his mom and dad at full volume. Ha ha. Thanks for the visit and I will reciprocate as soon as I get this problem resolves!

    • WordPress told me that everything is working fine (though they’re still trying to figure out why it isn’t – lol). When I look at the comments, it seems I’m not the only one who has something odd happening. Thanks for commiserating.

    • It was just so weird. Everything worked fine when I went to bed and this morning it was all over. I’m thinking it’s WP, and at least they are friendly and helpful. Sadly, the key isn’t in my hands. I’ll have to use reader for now.
